Summary: Our research addresses the role of education in social mobility. To do so,we employ a classical mediation and decomposition analysis. Starting from the analysis of the Origin -Education -Destination (OED) social mobility triangle, we decompose the total effect of the origin-destination relationship through the sum of the direct (OD) and indirect (O-E-D) effects. We make the general hypothesis that the effect of higher education is more important in developing countries since educational expansion is lower in these countries. In order to corroborate the findings,we propose three models of analysis and three techniques that will guide us in the research process: contingency table analysis, logistic regression and KHB decomposition analysis. The findings obtained allow us to affirm that higher education is a fundamental push mechanism that plays a very important role in all countries, but mainly in developing countries.
