Summary: This research article contributes mainly to the clarification of the relationship between Civil Society, State and Economy, because whenever civil society is talked about, it is confused and equated with social organizations that belong, in most cases, to economic monopolies. Methodologically, the definitions of civil society present in classical political theorists, especially Locke, Hobbes, Hegel, Kant and Spinoza, are critically analyzed and contrasted with the perspectives of Gramsci, Gorz and Marx. It was found that it is possible to conceive civil society outside the State, outside of state and economic interests. It is concluded that it is necessary to emancipate society from the coercive and suffocating exercise of the State and what goes along with it.
