Summary: This article presents a qualitative analysis of the intervention of the Colombian State on institutionalized children, from references such as the legal framework of the ColombianInstitute of Family Welfare, in contrast to Erving Goffman and the concept of total institutions, referenced the process developed from in-depth interviews with key actors in the institutional environment such as institutionalized adolescents and their trainers, this is a descriptive analysis of the experience of children with regard to the protection that the institutional environment provides. To finally recognize that the institutional environment in their characteristics can be compared to a total institution, as are prisons and psychiatric hospitals, this entails an experience that can inhibit adolescent social development primarily, but also their ability to cope with everyday life . It is recognized that the way it is raised institutional rule is idealized in their training and involves a significant limitations to the insert individual in this medium.
