Summary: This research work on the history of canon law tries to interpret some aspects of the process for the canonization of Ferdinand III, called the Saint (1201-1252), throughout the 17th century. Urban VIII, through the apostolic letter Caelestis Hierusalem cives, of July 5, 1634, gave the Sacred Congregation of Rites, erected in 1588, a precise itinerary to reach the truth about the destiny of the just. This legislation forced to elaborate a new testimony on the fame of sanctity and miracles of the holy conqueror of Seville. In 1662, a period of three years was granted to complete the reporting process. After the extensions of 1665, 1666 and 1667, in 1668, Archbishop Antonio Payno forwarded the entire transcript to the Apostolic See. After a certain sanatio in radice, the closure of a process, begun in 1624, could be achieved with the solemn canonization of the Castilian and Leonese monarch in 1671.
