In addition, it was noticed that (a) higher expenditures do not necessarily cause efficiency improvement; (b) a high IDS does not always imply good efficiency results; (c) smaller municipalities presented better indexes; (d) GDP may be underutilized in the promotion of education; (e) the increase in the daily workload is not being converted into an improvement in efficiency; (f) teachers with higher education appear to be underutilized. It is concluded that the municipalities of Ceará have relevant potential to improve their educational outcomes, and this increase of results regardless of factors such as size of the municipality or available resources.Esta pesquisa objetiva avaliar a eficiência relativa da educação em municípios cearenses por meio da metodologia Análise Envoltória de Dados. Os resultados evidenciaram uma eficiência média de 83,6%. Ademais, percebeu-se que: (a) maiores gastos não aumentam necessariamente a eficiência; (b) um alto Índice de Desenvolvimento Social nem sempre implica bons resultados de eficiência; (c) municípios menores apresentaram melhores índices; (d) o Produto Interno Bruto pode estar sendo mal aproveitado na promoção da educação; (e) o aumento da carga horária diária não está sendo convertido em mais eficiência; e (f) professores com curso superior parecem ser subaproveitados.
