Sumario: In this paper, we test insecurity feelings theory, an explanation of punitivity or firmness towards crime at the individual level. We rely on Spanish data from the 3257 study of the Centre of Sociological Research (CIS). Ordinal logit and logit regressions show that individuals tend to have firmer attitudes towards crime as they hold more acute insecurity feelings. These analyses control for relevant variables. Results are in agreement with previous tests of the theory in Spain. Our study offers evidence of other predictors of firmness towards crime: political ideology, level of education, and lack of trust in the Administration of Justice. Our study avoids the familiar limitation of estimating firmness with a single variable. Though the CIS study includes only two valid measures of firmness, we expect to reduce measurement error, improve statistical power, and achieve higher precision in the estimates, in comparison with the alternative use of single measures. Finally, our study takes categorical ordinal data seriously, applying the appropriate statistical tools: the use of OLS may produce misleading results, and the use of analytic tools for nominal data may lose important information. Results and limitations are discussed.
