Summary: This paper deals with electronic government from the perspective of Economics. It begins with some general notes on the topic, focusing particularly on Bannister’s (2007) three-level analysis and Soete and Weehuizen’s (2004) contributions, which view e-government as a promising third way to confront “government failures”. Next, I examine the techniques available to evaluate e-government efficiency. Finally, the paper offers a DEA based two-step efficiency analysis aimed at testing the influence of e-government on the efficiency of Galician municipalities. The analysis results show both the difficulty of statistically assessing this influence and a possible presence of the so-called “IT productivity paradox”.
