Summary: This paper examines the concept of the politicization of the public administration, and the difficulties faced in applying it in specific politicaladministrative contexts. We begin with an analysis of the politics/administration dichotomy, which is the modern origin of the politicization concept, and then review recent contributions to it, giving our own vision of what should be its present content. Following this content, we expose the difficulties inherent in “measuring” the politicization of specific public administrations through an analysis of some of what we have called “available posts” within the Spanish Civil Service, as these posts were organised after the March 2004 General Election.
