For the first time, the liberals go into an election split in various tendencies, representing the forerunners of modern political parties. Even though this is the denomination used in historiography -and the one used at the time-, the term "party" had a negative connotation: their structure was more or less that of secret societies, and they were neither homogeneous nor disciplined. Heterogeneity was bigger than that meant by the traditional opposition between "moderates" and "radicals", labels the meaning of which is either not very precise or simply confusing. The electoral campaign was marked by a high pitched political situation and the peculiarities of the competing parties. That the party in office lost is another circumstance that added to the exceptional nature of the 1821 elections. The victory of the radicals was neither as neat as it is usually considered nor the members of Parliament supporting the Government as extremist as conservative historiographers have represented them to be.En 1821 se celebraron en España las primeras elecciones en las que unas Cortes constitucionales sucederían a otras, la única ocasión con la Constitución de 1812 vigente, y será también la primera vez en que los liberales acudan a ellas divididos en varias tendencias, que anunciaban la aparición de los modernos partidos políticos. Denominados así por la historiografía e incluso en la época, aunque el término “partido” era considerado peyorativo, su forma de organización eran las sociedades más o menos secretas, que no agrupaban a todos los políticos, no eran homogéneas ni tampoco disciplinadas. El pluralismo era mayor de lo que indica la tradicional división entre "moderados" y "exaltados", términos poco precisos e incluso engañosos. La campaña electoral estuvo condicionada por una tensa situación política y por las propias características de los “partidos” enfrentados, otra peculiaridad es que, algo excepcional en la España anterior a 1931, las perdió el gobierno.
