The end of the Cold War brought about fundamental changes in various parts of the world. The collapse of the Soviet Union provoked the political and social transformation of all countries that before 1989-1990 had lived under the sphere of interest of the USSR, that is, belonged to the Eastern Bloc. System changes and democratic transitions in Central and Eastern Europe presented different features in each country, although they all had some common characteristics. The modifications did not leave any terrain intact: politics, society, economy and culture – to mention only the most visible areas – had to adapt to the new circumstances, accomplishing the real transition from dictatorship to democracy. In my article I will present an overview of the system change in Hungary; instead of going into details about the decisive facts, I will highlight some elements and processes that we could consider as crucial features of the Hungarian case, also essentials for the country to join the European Union in the 21st century. |
