Citizenship is a condition that throughout the history of thought and societies has been the subject of numerous reflections and interpretations, of intentions and actions that attempt to validate its exercise as an option closer to everyday life. Its renewed validity on the desks of the theoreticians and in the agendas of the governments, derived from the constraints of globalization, is due to the strengthening ofa citizenship which transcends borders, and besides, wants to break down barriers in which differences and inequality still find refuge.Este artículo presenta en forma sintética los hallazgos que, en materia de ciudadanía, se obtuvieron en una investigación de mayor escala denominada “El capital social: una aproximación comprensiva hacia la dinámica de los jóvenes”1 . El objeto de esta parte de la investigación fue analizar en detalle cómo se percibe y materializa el concepto de ciudadanía en los jóvenes de Caldas, no solo para conocer sus prácticas ciudadanas tradicionales y alternativas, sino también para estimar su potencial real dentro del contexto social actual. La ciudadanía es una condición que a través de la historia del pensamiento y de las sociedades ha sido objeto de numerosas refl exiones e interpretaciones, de intenciones y de acciones que tratan de validar su ejercicio como una opción más cercana a la cotidianidad de la vida.
