Summary: The unequal process of economic development experienced in Spain in recent decades has resulted in the persistence of relative economic and social underdevelopment in rural areas. This is due to avoidable economic, social and political causes. The present study is intended to shine some light on the importance and need to reconsider the model of providing public services in rural areas, especially regarding the provision of essential services such as education, a crucial tool for easing the phenomenon of depopulation, and improving the quality of living standards among the rural population. A parallel aim to analyse the potential for boosting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in our country, which could be considered as a new opportunity to promote sustainable rural development and, thus, the adoption of measures to halt land abandonment.
