Corruption is shaking the stability of the political systems of the region. Big scandals, in which millions of dollars from public funds have been embezzled, represent an unprecedented challenge to Latin American democracies. The new “normal” growth of the economies is way below what governments need to fight poverty. The perception is that those in power depleting the treasury, and they continue to rapidly deteriorate the citizens’ satisfaction with democracy. Irregular use of money in politics is turning into one of the most frequent acts of corruption. The handing over of illegal resources in several electoral campaigns in Latin America, particularly in Brazil, Peru, Guatemala, Colombia, Honduras and El Salvador, among others, unveiled a transnational network of corruption that led to several judiciary processes. The region fights against a practice that keeps on weakening democratic institutions. The article presents some lessons of the “politics and corruption” binomial in Latin America. It provides a summary of the status of the Northern Triangle of Central America and presents a debate on the convenience of treating irregular funding as corruption

Los grandes escándalos en los que se han malversado cantidades millonarias del erario nacional representan un desafío sin precedentes para las democracias latinoamericanas. El nuevo “normal” del crecimiento de las economías, muy por debajo del que necesitan los gobiernos para combatir la pobreza y la percepción de que los responsables de la cosa pública están vaciando las arcas del Estado, contribuyen a deteriorar, aceleradamente, la satisfacción de los ciudadanos con la democracia. El uso irregular del dinero en la política se está convirtiendo en el medio más frecuente utilizado en actos de corrupción. La entrega de recursos ilícitos en varias de las campañas electorales en América Latina, particularmente en Brasil, Perú, Guatemala, Colombia, Honduras y El Salvador, entre otros, delató una red transnacional de corrupción que motivó la apertura de varios procesos judiciales. La región continúa al acecho de una práctica que sigue desarticulando las instituciones de la democracia.
