Summary: |
The most important official in Castilian municipal life during the Middle and Modern Ages was the corregidor. One of his main functions was the judiciary, although he did not always have legal studies (many were “de capa y espada” corregidores). During the 18th century, a period in which this officer was also present in the Crown of Aragon after the Nueva Planta Decrees, the corregidor “de letras” was promoted (when he had legal studies). Some corregimientos “de capa y espada” became corregimientos "de letras", one of them was Hellín al-ready in the reign of Fernando VII in the 19th century. This process gave rise to a confrontation between different groups of the local oligarchy and the corregi-dor. The Royal Council of Castile resolved the file, without attending to these struggles. |
