Tolerance is understood as an unavoidable requirement for an authentic development of an open society, linked to a concept of freedom that advocates an understanding on an equal footing between different cultures including minority ones. The methodology consists in developing the concept of tolerance in relation to minorities using multidisciplinary references. The article has been divided into four sections: In the first section, it analyzes the context of tolerance from the perspective of interculturalism. The second section explains the authentic tolerance as an element for the integration of minorities in open societies. The third section tries to offer answers to the tolerance-freedom pairing. Finally, the fourth section draws some conclusions.El presente trabajo analiza, desde la perspectiva del interculturalismo, la importancia de la tolerancia como elemento necesario para una mejor integración de las minorías en el contexto de los estados postliberales. La tolerancia se entiende como requisito ineludible para un verdadero desarrollo de una sociedad abierta, puesta en relación con un concepto de libertad que apueste por un entendimiento, desde el plano de la igualdad, entre las diferentes culturas incluidas las minoritarias. La metodología consiste en desarrollar el concepto de tolerancia en relación con las minorías utilizando referencias multidisciplinares. El artículo se divide en cuatro apartados: el primer apartado analiza el contexto de la tolerancia desde la perspectiva del interculturalismo. El segundo, en cambio, explica la auténtica tolerancia como elemento para la integración de las minorías en sociedades abiertas. El tercer apartado intenta dar respuestas en relación al binomio tolerancia-libertad.
