In summary, the sixteen years of presidential administration show that the strategy of internationaliza­tion of the armed conflict chosen by the two presidents in that period determined in a great extent the strategic alliances formed by the country. Thus, whereas Uribe Vélez privileged bilateralism with United States, Santos Calde­ron had better relations with Latin America and the European Union in order to finance and buoy the negotiation process with the Farc. With regard to the Foreign Service, even though there is continuity in its lack of profes­sionalization, the Government of Juan Manuel Santos had important gestures in the strength­ening of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.El artículo presenta un análisis de la política exterior colombiana en el período 2002–2018, enmarcando el estudio en tres categorías bá­sicas: la internacionalización del conflicto armado, las sociedades estratégicas del país en el contexto internacional y el servicio exterior. En sumatoria, los dieciséis años de administra­ción presidencial arrojaron que la estrategia de internacionalización del conflicto armado que ambos presidentes eligieron determinó, en gran medida, las sociedades estratégicas que el país forjó. Así, mientras Uribe Vélez privilegió el bilateralismo con Estados Unidos, Santos Calderón se acercó a la región y la Unión Europea en aras de financiar y mantener en marcha el proceso de negociación con las Farc.
