In recent years, however, different studies have appeared that question this perspective and, whilst also maintaining distance from essentialism, defend the idea that the national phenomenon has an earlier historical origin. The approaches in this sense are varied; some are case studies, others present broader visions. Some authors simply intend to question the modernist perspective, whereas others provide a causal explanation with the aim of replacing it. The most relevant contributions are subjected to analysis and criticism in this study. It is argued that the pre-contemporary approach to the national phenomenon offers solid arguments to question modernist theories, and is thus achieving an increasing degree of acceptance. This suggests that the modernist perspective may lose its current status as a dominant paradigm in the future.En el estudio teórico de la nación, la segunda mitad del siglo XX ha estado marcada por el descrédito de las visiones esencialistas y el absoluto predominio de las teorías modernistas; es decir, por la idea de que la identidad nacional es un fenómeno nacido en la edad contemporánea y exclusivo a esta. En los últimos años, sin embargo, han aflorado diferentes investigaciones que cuestionan esta perspectiva y que, también alejadas del esencialismo, defienden la idea de que el fenómeno nacional tiene un origen histórico más temprano. Los enfoques en este sentido son variados; unos son estudios de caso y otros ofrecen visiones más generales; algunos autores pretenden básicamente cuestionar la perspectiva modernista, mientras que otros ofrecen una explicación causal con pretensión de sustituirla. Las aportaciones consideradas más relevantes serán sometidas a análisis y crítica.
