Summary: This paper adds to research about sectoral competitiveness through the synthesis of existing literature, both globally and nationally. The objective of this study is to analyze the competitiveness of the footwear, leather and leather goods sector through the review of literature for the Colom-bian case. Theoretical background, methods of empirical estimation and factors that influence performance are analyzed briefly. Many circumstances lead to the conclusions that this sector has a relatively modest importance as a proportion of the total national production and that it is not competitive in the global scenario: competition posed by Asian producers, particularly China, scarce technological incorporation, low qualification of the labor force and absence of association of producers to negotiate with suppliers. In this critical scenario, public sector promotion policies may be secondary.
