A review in the literature on subnational democratization shows us that there are two methods to identify this concept empirically: in the construction of indexes and in the assignment of subnational hybrid regime types. However, most of the works do not conceptualize the term "subnational democratization"; therefore, in the present text we establish an abstract general conception and the constitutive dimensions that it must contemplate. Subsequently, we analyze both methods (and the works that sustain them) and identify if they encompass the established conceptualization. Finally, we contrast them to indicate advantages and disadvantages in the use of one or the other method |
