La reforma luterana y la revolución francesa fueron dos hechos históricos que supusieron ruptura religiosa y política respectivamente que tuvieron reflejo en la obra del escritor austríaco a través de la biografía de María Estuardo y de Fouché. Por su parte, en Castiello contra Calvino el eje será el ser humano y su lucha por sus derechos y libertades empezando por la libertad de conciencia.
