This research addresses the sociocultural perceptions of the population of the urban area in Laguna de Perlas Community related to the problem of HIV and AIDS. The population is aware that AIDS has no cure; but also, there is no confidence in the state instances (Health Center - Bluefields Hospital) to perform the HIV test due to the lack of confidentiality according to the interviewees. To improve results in the prevention of the epidemic, the implementation of educational campaigns with children, youth and adults is valued. Culture and spirituality play a decisive role in prevention; However, beliefs related to the perception of divine punishment or sin must be discarded because it induces social exclusion of those infected with AIDS. Some characteristics associated with the infection are expressed in gender inequality, for example, with the submission of women, who is associated in some cases in relation to the use of condoms as a synonym of infidelity, distrust that comes out afloat internally within the couples. Although the rates of AIDS in Laguna de Perlas are low according to Acción Médica Cristiana (AMC), the population values that it is not prepared to face the progress of the pandemic, and recognize that, when AIDS is a social problem, it requires organizational integration that ensures a solidarity circle in the carriers and provides greater confidence to take the test to acquire collective commitments of responsibility. |
