Summary: The purpose of this work is to analyse some characteristics of gender violence from the medicolegal, criminological and criminal perspectives. Our specific aims are to examine the socio-demographic characteristics, to determine the various forms of abuse and their context and to analyse the victim´s attitude in the judicial process. Information from 580 files of the Prosecutor's Office of Santiago de Compostela classified as "Gender Violence", with final judgment, has been selected. We have verified individual, family and social characteristics, emphasizing the predominance of women of Spanish nationality, reproductive age and middle-low socioeconomic status. The most prevalent crime is occasional maltreatment, and in a significant number of cases children are also affected. The attitude of the victims at the moment of denouncing is conditioned by socio-demographic circumstances and the fact that they decline to testify plays a significant role in the final decision to acquit the defendant.
