Buscó dilucidar las peculiaridades de la relación centro-periferia analizando los orígenes y las características del capitalismo.Frank adoptó sucesivas visiones centradas en el atraso latinoamericano, la dinámica del sistema mundial y el protagonismo internacional de Asia. En cada abordaje suscitó intensas polémicas por su tendencia a radicalizar la discusión contradiciendo sus planteos previos.
