Summary: Through the analysis of the speeches of the consul M.P. Cato and the tribune L. Valerius in the debate on the repeal of thelex Oppia (195 b.C.), this paper tries to determine the consistencyand the scope of the distinction between leges in aeternum lataeand leges in aliquod tempus latae that tribune Valerius would haveused as the main argument in favor of repeal. The conclusion reachedis that such a distinction lacks theoretical solidity, at least atthe historical moment in which it was apparently formulated, andthat its scope, merely tactical, is limited to the concrete discussionon the lex Oppia.
