Summary: The impact of employment and labor flexibility in Argentina is analyzed in the context of labor reform, particularly in the education system. It was found that 39.7% of teachers work while ill due to pressure not to be absent. The impact on the quality of education and on the problems of the teachers who become ill is analyzed. Study results indicate that 39.6% of the teachers encounter students with learning difficulties, 27.2% have problems with the subject matter and 25.2% with planiing. Since Chile has been presented as a model of efficiency, an analysis is performed comparing the causes of sick leave in Chile and Argentina. A general profile is constructed of job tasks and changes in health from investigations carried out in Buenos Aires, Rosario, and Cordoba. Starting from a survey carried out in Rosario in 1992, the relationship between self-value and social value of work and its impact on the mental health of teachers, and the different manifestations knows as "teaching malaise" is analyzed.
