Summary: This paper aims to study the absenteeism of Spanish Members of Parliament in the lower House during mid-nineteenth century as a means to consider political representation. In particular, the lack of attendance at Parliamentary sessions was so extended that it called into question the relationship between representatives and the represented from the perspective of accountability. The paper considers whether politicians were able to give satisfactory account of the parliamentary actions developed. The paper raises the possibility of the electorate’s willingness to monitor parliament, which extended this engagement beyond liberal groups to include the citizenry more generally.
