Summary: Since 2015, the European Union (EU) has faced a serious problem regarding the management, reception and integration of refugees, of a magnitude unprecedented since the end of the Second World War. The migratory wave has tested EU policies on border control, asylum and immigration, highlighting their shortcomings and limitations. Hence, the Union is faced with the need to strengthen these policies, in order to respond effectively to this challenge. Such a response must be based on the values and principles on which the EU is founded. Only moving towards an authentic federalization of these policies will be sufficient to confront this irrepressible expression of globalization.
