This was a qualitative study using the phenomenological-hermeneutic approach, which transits the paths of subjectivity, echoing memories, motivations and values, in an attempt to interpret and understand the meaning of their experiences. The interview was used as a dialogical technique to approximate the experiences of the dentists who acted as key informants. Results indicated the presence of labor monotony, complacency and disagreement, occupational stress, emotional disturbances and irritability. We conclude that dental practice in the public sector significantly affects dentists, who describe their work as repetitive, routine and unpleasant. To ensure health and safety for dentists and guarantee their right to health, new approaches approach to practices and subjective implications are needed, together with rethinking how policies, strategies and initiatives are shaped.La investigación se propuso describir las vivencias de los odontólogos que trabajan en instituciones públicas de salud con relación a las condiciones de salud y bienestar laboral, sustentado en sus percepciones y experiencias. Es un estudio cualitativo, de enfoque fenomenológico-hermenéutico, que transita los caminos de la subjetividad, haciendo eco de los recuerdos, motivaciones y valores, en la búsqueda de interpretar y comprender el significado de sus experiencias. Se utilizó la entrevista como técnica dialógica para lograr la aproximación a las experiencias y vivencias de los odontólogos que actuaron como informantes clave. Los resultados indican presencia de monotonía laboral, displicencia y disconformidad, estrés ocupacional, alteraciones emocionales e irritabilidad. Se concluye, que la práctica odontológica en el sector público marca de manera significativa a los odontólogos quienes describen su trabajo como repetitivo, rutinario y displacentero.
