Summary: The article aims at providing a comparative overview of the issues related to the implementation of the Directive 2011/24/UE in the EU Member States. Whereas other comparative studies have analysed adopting classical criteria, i.e. selecting the countries by the healthcare system, this research is directed at identifying some general models in the implementation of the Directive: the article propose to define those models in terms of defensive, competitive or cooperative. The prevalence of one model over the other can be detected by examining how Member States have dealt with practical problems that the implementation of the Directive raised, such as the prior authorization, the relationship between the Directive and the territorial structure of the State, the issue of the private healthcare. The article has focused the analysis on the access to information to patients provided by Member States and their National Contact Points. The possibility to “isolate” this feature of the implementation of the Directive allows to verify if there exists a prevailing trend in the Member States’ implementation, i.e. if there is a defensive, competitive or a cooperative attitude.
