Summary: Introduction: Maternal health is a priority in global health, seeking to reduce the high rates of morbidity and mortality in the perinatal period of women. Introduction: Maternal health is a priority in global health, aiming to reduce high rates of morbidity and mortality in the perinatal stage of women. Despite the achievements in reducing it, it is necessary to continue working on the improvement of health services. Objectives: To describe and analyze the meaning of nursing care for hospitalized women with obstetric complications. Methods: descriptive - exploratory qualitative research, depth interviews were applied, theoretical reference of Jean Watson and Kristen Swanson. Nine women with hospitalized obstetric complications, sample by saturation of testimony, participated. It was coded and categorized. Results: Discourse analysis originated in three categories and four subcategories: 1) Procedural assistance: 2) Enabling self-care: a) Education and b) Information and reporting; and 3) Attitudes of care: a) Generation of trust and c) Company and dedication. Conclusions: The final considerations mention that the meaning of nursing care for the research subject becomes important to strengthen professional practice.
