The research presented addressed the importance of cooperatives in the social economy, being an instrument of civic participation and an example of teamwork, focusing the study on the need to incorporate the organization in banana production, especially of small and medium producer, being an export line highlighted in the country and especially in the province of El Oro, "called the capital of bananas". A documentary investigation was conducted and the empirical method of interviewing producers was used to understand the vision regarding the effectiveness of the work collective in banana production under the principles of cooperation.La legislación cooperativa ecuatoriana data de 1937, pero fue en la década del cincuenta al sesenta que cobró verdadera presencia en el ámbito nacional, con la creación de la mayor parte de las organizaciones cooperativas. La investigación que se presenta abordó la importancia del cooperativismo en la economía social, por ser instrumento de participación ciudadana y ejemplo de trabajo en equipo, centrando el estudio en la necesidad de incorporar dicha organización en la producción bananera, sobre todo de pequeños y medianos productores, por ser un renglón exportable destacado en el país y en especial en la provincia de El Oro, “llamada la capital del banano”.
