In this context it is worth asking if passions and emotions should play a role in the democratic political legitimacy. This article explores the problems of emotions in the democratic theory. First, we stress the role of emotions in the political scene today, particularly their role in the populist movements. Secondly, this paper advances some suggestion for a solution beyond a strict understanding of the criteria of deliberative democratic theory. The result is a new perspective of the possibilities of the practice of deliberative democracy, one which abandons the search for perfection in only one institution, and looks instead to a more dialogical understanding of deliberative theory itself.Hoy en día, el auge del populismo, tanto de extrema derecha como el aumento de los movimientos de protesta de izquierda, pone las emociones en la escena, y el conflicto político aparece controlado por pasiones, tales como miedo y rabia. En este contexto cabe preguntarse ¿deberían las pasiones y emociones jugar algún papel en la legitimidad de la política democrática? Este artículo explora los problemas de estas emociones en la teoría y la práctica de la democracia. En primer lugar, se analiza el papel de las emociones en el escenario político actual, en particular el papel que desempeñan en los movimientos populistas; en segundo lugar, se emprende la búsqueda de una solución fuera de los límites de una comprensión estricta de los criterios democráticos deliberativos.
