In this article, I will examine one of the key doctrines of this treatise: the virtues he recommends the prince to have. By doing so, I will show if Carvallo de Villas Boas is closer to a realistic or idealistic understanding of politics.Martín Carvallo de Villas Boas es un autor portugués que, como Bartolomé Felipe y Pedro Barbosa Homem, escribe en castellano un tratado de Razón de Estado durante la unión de las monarquías portuguesa y española. Su obra Espejo de príncipes es una de las más brillantes obras de este género que, por motivos muy variados, no ha recibido la atención debida.
