Summary: The present paper is part of the theoretical framework around the concept of citizenship that the members of hotbed of research “Sophia” in Citizenship Education and Culture of Legality have made. This document addresses the most significant considerations on the concept of citizenship that have been built from its inception in ancient times to the version of modernity, consolidated in the liberal democracy. This historical tour viewed from the ontological, epistemological and political relations of the concept. Finally, it provides an outline of the characteristics of the context in which the legacy of modernity’s concept is reconfiguring and the ethical and political challenges that this time proposes us for the future with the recovery of citizenship as participation. The researchers in this analysis are expected to contribute to the debate about of citizenship education in historical perspective.
