Summary: This paper adopts a humanistic perspective in examining the reality of the phenomenon of human trafficking, focusing in particular on its effect on women and children, it looks at human trafficking as a crime that gravely threatens the fundamental human rights of its victims and generates considerable economic benefits for the international crime rings that oversee it. The illegal nature of the organizations that direct human trafficking make it extremely difficult to control. Varying international, regional and sub-regional courts concerned particularly with human rights have developed extensive specific regulations with the aim of combatting human trafficking. For the European Union, this fight constitutes a challenge of the first order, and currently abides by the guidelines found in Directive 2011/36/UE of April 5, 2011, and the Communication of the European Commission that incorporates the “EU Strategy towards the Eradication of Trafficking in Human Beings (2012- 2016)”, of June 19, 2012.
