Laburpena: The European integration is traditionally used as a model by Latin American States in their integration process. Nevertheless, in the last twenty years, the European model has taken a new direction in order to give States more power. The current trend is far from the original model of integration and it is possible the European Union is rethinking the approach of an ever closer union between the member States. The following text analyses this new direction, born in 1992 with the Maastricht Treaty, taken by the European Union and outlines the problem with this change in the nature of the European Union.
