Summary: With a brief summary of the recent legal reforms to the electoral system, both the Municipal and the Electoral Code, the article describes the new public financing system that has been established in order to economically support the political parties that participate in the local government electoral processes and that did not exist prior to the entry in force of the new Electoral Code. Emphasizing the legal characteristics of this new financing system and comparing to the public financing system for political parties that participate in national electoral processes, it points out the jurisprudence of the TSE in the matter, outlining that the first resolution where the electoral tribunal ordered the payment of this State resources, was precisely in favor of a municipal level political party. Finally, from the perspective that the lack of public funding for the municipal electoral processes constituted a barrier for the Costa Rican democratic strengthening and therefore its inclusion represents an advancement in the deepening of citizens’ political rights, the authors conclude with some legal reform recommendations, with the purpose of strengthening this financing system, mainly through its systematization and equalization with the financing of the national electoral process, with the aim tof strengthening the party platforms and thus deepening our democratic culture at the local level. A Table of the political parties which funding has already been ordered by the Tribunal is included, enlisting total and percent amounts granted, as well as those amounts not allocated and which then return to the State
