Summary: Study on how the evolution of social policy and the maturity of the democratic political system in Costa Rica, has created in citizens an awareness of gender equity; consequently, facilitating the adoption of standards and their proper implementation. In the first chapter the paper presents an overview of the sociopolitical context in which the evolution of the gender situation and status of women in Costa Rica has taken place. Subsequently, the paper provides information about the regulatory framework in which are located the laws relating to women's political participation and the evolution of gender participation in elected office. Finally, it presents a list of challenges facing the Costa Rican society, so that the aspiration for political power is equally accessed by women and men a reality, beyond the numbers
