In an increasingly interdependent world, multilateralism is taking on an ever more important role. This explains the academic interest in multilateral institutions as mechanisms of governance meeting the challenges currently on the international agenda, linked to the process of change in the international system. This process of change is based on the emergence of new powers and the appearance of new norms, rooted in solidarity. The concepts usually applied to the distribution of power in the international system (polarity) or to the forms of interaction between states (multilateralism) are losing explanatory power or are taking on more complex forms. Hence, considering how multilateral institutions adapt to a world of emerging powers is a theoretical and empirical challenge for which answers must be found in three areas: power distribution, interstate cooperation, and the framework of values and ideas.

Ceci explique l'intérêt académique pour les institutions multilatérales comme mécanismes de gouvernance face aux défis de l'agenda international, défis liés au processus de changement que subit la structure du système international. Ce processus de changement s�est établi à partir de l'émergence de nouvelles puissances et de l'apparition de nouvelles normes, liées au solidarisme. Les concepts habituellement appliqués à la distribution du pouvoir dans le système international (polarité) ou aux formes d'interaction entre les États (multilatéralisme) ont moins de capacité explicative ou sont devenus beaucoup plus complexes. Donc, se demander comment se sont adaptées les institutions multilatérales à un monde avec des puissances émergentes implique un défi théorique et empirique qui cherche des réponses dans trois domaines: la distribution du pouvoir, la coopération interétatique et le cadre de valeurs et d'idées.En un mundo crecientemente interdependiente, el multilateralismo es cada vez más importante. Ello explica el interés académico por las instituciones multilaterales como mecanismos de gobernanza frente a los desafíos de la agenda internacional, desafíos vinculados al proceso de cambio que vive la estructura del sistema internacional. Este proceso de cambio está asentado en la emergencia de nuevas potencias y en la aparición de nuevas normas, surgidas del solidarismo. Los conceptos habitualmente aplicados a la distribución del poder en el sistema internacional (polaridad) o a las formas de interacción entre los Estados (multilateralismo) pierden capacidad explicativa o se tornan más complejos.
