Summary: |
The severe environmental problems that humanity faces today are the result of the
imposition of the irrational production and consumption models of the developed world.
Forest destruction, soil degradation, water contamination, ozone layer deflection, global
warming and other phenomena, are driving to the disappearance of the human kind.
The cooperative model, in its production or services expressions, contemplates the
same essence of sustainable development, with a harmonic balance between
economic growth, social equal development and the protection of the environment.
When analyzing modern principles of cooperatives, a close relationship with the bases
of sustainable development is identified. These principles are intimately linked with
such values as mutual help, solidarity, responsibility, equality, justice, respect and
democracy, that's why they promote and project a sustainability model, anchored in the
community, for which an authentic local development is built, where there isn't lucre
and anarchy and whose main objective is the human being's harmonic development,
based in common work to achieve a collective benefit.
In particular, agricultural cooperatives have a great importance in the environmental
topic and sustainability, in correspondence with the so close connection with the soils
and water, natural resources that suffer a great pressure for the development. That's
why it is indispensable for them to introduce and extend technical and sustainable
procedures, and be projected toward the natural and organic productions |
