Summary: The European deficit, rather than democratic or one of legitimacy, must be understood as a lack of justice. This article discusses the conditions for its resolution, beyond the intergovernmental approach. The community in which the demands of justice must be articulated does not have to be understood on the model of the national communities, but as a practice. From this point of view, I examine the difficulties and possibilities of transforming the divisive logic of the European Union in a game of cooperación. And I conclude with a proposal to consider that the current economic crisis does not necessarily represent an opportunity to advance in the European integration, that must recover a language of freedom.
