This essay focuses on the relationship between democracy and the environment. The aim is to reflect on the idea of an ecological democracy. First, the arguments shaping the view of an ecological democracy as a deliberative democracy are illustrated. Then I concentrate on Robyn Eckersley�s theory of ecological democracy, and highlight the main differences between her account and liberal democracy. Eckersley�s conception is analyzed form the point of view of green political theory and contrasted with other versions of deliberative democracy. Finally, John Dryzek�s democratic thought is introduced as a counterpoint. I claim that Eckersley�s proposal privileges the state as the key actor of ecological democracy, and this, I contend, is problematic on various grounds for ecological democracy itself |
