First, the arguments shaping the view of an ecological democracy as a deliberative democracy are illustrated. Then I concentrate on Robyn Eckersleys theory of ecological democracy, and highlight the main differences between her account and liberal democracy. Eckersleys conception is analyzed form the point of view of green political theory and contrasted with other versions of deliberative democracy. Finally, John Dryzeks democratic thought is introduced as a counterpoint. I claim that Eckersleys proposal privileges the state as the key actor of ecological democracy, and this, I contend, is problematic on various grounds for ecological democracy itself
