A clear distinction between authoritarianism and totalitarianism is useful, in order to analyse further the possibilities of totalitarianism contained in charismatic populism and in the despotic routines of non democratic and antipluralistic cultures. In the Third World and because of a partial modernization process, the pathologies of modernity can be also found, which are distinctive of totalitarianism.Una teoría crítica del totalitarismo es necesaria por la perseverancia de las condiciones que crearon el totalitarismo «clásico», fenómeno que se puede percibir hoy en algunas regiones del Tercer Mundo. Es útil una clara distinción entre autoritarismo y totalitarismo, para luego analizar las posibilidades del totalitarismo derivadas del populismo carismático y de las rutinas despóticas de culturas no democráticas y antipluralistas.
