We understand childhood as a sociohistorical concept and, therefore, analyse the existing relationship between national and international regulations currently in force, discourses, and the institutional doings as regards the (always diverse and heterogeneous) topic of childhood. We ask ourselves how do past childhood representations and models act and how this makes the actual fulfillment of children rights in institutional settings more complex. We will focus particularly on a diurnal institution located in one of the peripheral neighbourhoods of the City of Bahía Blanca, in the south of Buenos Aires province, Argentina.El objetivo de este artículo es realizar una reflexión teórica a partir de datos empíricos sobre las representaciones de la niñez y el accionar institucional en contextos de desigualdad social en la Argentina actual. Entendemos la niñez como una construcción sociohistórica y analizamos la relación existente entre las normativas nacionales e internacionales vigentes, los discursos y el accionar institucional referidos al campo de la niñez (siempre diverso y heterogéneo). Nos preguntamos en qué medida actúan las representaciones y los modelos ya superados de niños y niñas y cómo esto complejiza el cumplimiento efectivo de los derechos de los niños y niñas en marcos institucionales.
