Summary: The protection of underwater cultural heritage has experienced some boost as a result of the pillage by Odyssey Marine Exploration, Inc. This incident launched a shockwave when the harm caused by the subtraction of cultural property from the wreck of the Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, the Spanish frigate sunken on 1804, comes to light. Taking the �Odyssey Case� as its reference, it is undertaken a critical review of the current protection of underwater cultural heritage, from a legal perspective as well as from other related disciplines.
