Summary: This article aims to discern the legal options that the new Colombian Consumers Statute (Estatuto del Consumidor: Ley 1480 de 2011) provides with respect to issues regarding lack of quality or suitability for goods and services offered on the market. In order to achieve this, a legal analysis will be applied, which is useful for the purpose of establishing the legal position of consumers and of both producers and distributors as defined by the new primary and power rules created by the statute. Such analysis leads to the conclusion that the statute strengthened the remedies traditionally offered by the law of obligations, particularly by providing quicker alternatives that can be applied prior to recourse to judicial procedures.
