Summary: This article seeks to review the merits and limits of the different ways in which the freedom of expression has been mesured in the United States, arguing that the most appropriate method is the one employed in a survey conducted in order to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. Then it summarizes the results obtained in other four democratic cultures, including Israeli-Arabs, Jews, residents of Moscow and Hong Kong. After that compares these studies with results obtained in a pilot study applied in Mexico. Finally, answers the question "So what?" Refl ecting on how they can use the results of future research in Mexico or any other country to stimulate discussions at national level on the media and the right to self-expression.
