Summary: |
This work analyses the relation between German and Brazilian political culture
beginning with a focus on cultural history (and ideas) between 1879 and 1939. We analyze
the circulation of ideas and the cultural appropriation of three authors on the German legal
field: Rudolf von Jhering, Ernst Haeckel and Hans Kelsen. The reception of these authors in Brazil may be gleaned from works by writers on the legal field in Brazil: Clóvis Bevilaqua
and Silvio Romero, and in the discussions on the Brazilian Constitution in 1934. We
consider the cultural mediations present in this process, among them those of French and
Iberian culture. Our hypothesis is that the process of these German authors reception in
Brazil was mediated by the translation and appropriation of multiple political cultures, with
the French and Iberian the most evident. The survey is grounded in bibliographical
collections from the Collection of Rare Works at the Rio de Janeiro National Library and
the Superior Court of the State of Rio de Janeiro (TJRJ) Library. The article forms part of a
doctorate in progress. |
