This article analyzes the main arguments that were used in these debates: from the meaning of silence to the force of habit, from the appeal to the scientific theories based on prejudice, to the emotions deprived of reasons. I suggest that women's suffrage should not be understood as the outcome of a lineal or necessary evolution from the values of liberalism and the defense of universal rights. I have paid special attention to how the aim of preserving the sexual order worked in the different political cultures, particularly in liberalism.A lo largo del siglo XIX y hasta la concesión del voto femenino en 1931, han sido muchos y diversos los argumentos esgrimidos para excluir a las mujeres de los derechos políticos. Este artículo analiza las principales líneas argumentales de estos debates: desde el significado del silencio al dictado de la costumbre, de las teorías científicas basadas en el prejuicio a las emociones prácticamente desprovistas de razones. En el texto planteo que la progresiva ampliación de los derechos políticos de las mujeres no debe ser entendida como fruto de una evolución lineal ni necesaria a partir de los principios del liberalismo y de la defensa de derechos universales.
